The thought of an internet tablet is, at least at first, a confusing one. It’s not a notebook, or a PDA, or smartphone, but rather an oddity that takes aspects of each and mashs them into a single device. On the surface it is hard to pin down just what the device is. It is not a phone, but it’s made by Nokia and it can be used for making and receiving calls. Similarly, it’s not a notebook, but it is a portable computer than runs Linux. While this may all seem odd at first, the internet tablet is just the product a lot of people have been waiting for, whether or not they know it.

So what is an internet tablet? In the case of Nokia’s N800 it is a 5.7" x 2.95" x 0.5" portable device that weighs just under half a pound. It runs Linux on a platform known as Internet Tablet OS 2007 edition and is powered by 330-MHz Texas Instruments OMAP 2420 processor along with 128MB RAM and 2568MB flash storage. Viewing is done on an 800×480 display that takes up almost the entire front of the device.

The N800 is actually Nokia’s second generation internet tablet. The previous model, the 770, is still for sale (for $40 cheaper than the N800). The older model has a slightly larger, has a less elegant design, and lacks the N800’s on-board camera as well as its second flash card expansion slot. The N800 has double the RAM and onboard storage of the 770 as well as a new processor. Both devices run the Internet Tablet operating system, which is based on Debian, though the newer model has been upgraded to the 2007 version. Aside from a few tweaks the controls on the devices are basically the same, though the N800 is overall a much more refined product. While the 770 was largely a toy for enthusiasts, the N800 seems ready for much wider adoption.

I don’t know how on earth this happen, but some chinese manufacturer maneged to make an authentic cover of the Nokia N95 when it still was in the code name Nokia N83, really weird, and I got hang of it in a shop… Cool!

All one has to do is call up an Access Number relevant for the country you wish to call and then call “00” followed by the “country code” and the number itself. You would be prompted by voice instructions after you dial up the access number but you need not waste time and can dial the destination number preceded by “00” at any time during the prompt.

The procedure is simple –

1. Dial the access number (0844 570 9678 for India) from your mobile phone or land line

2. Once you get through there will be a recorded message

3. No need to waste time and hear the recorded message…. Instead

4. Dial “00” “country code you wish to dial (91 for India)” “city code and number or mobile number in India”

5. Wait for 30-35 seconds while your number gets connected – you will hear the number dialed ringing. E

So basically, when you make a call via the access numbers given below, you only pay for calling the relevant access numbers. It is your service provider (British Telecom or mobile operator or whomsoever you use) that will charge you. So for example, if you made a 5 minute call to India from a BT phone, then next time you get your BT bill you would see a call to our 0844 number, a duration of 5 minutes and a charge of 25p and absolutely no other charges. Simple!

Just to satisfy your curiosity, the people providing this service make money because they are passed along a small margin from BT. It’s as simple as that.
