Arrival of iPhones greeted by ‘armed guards’

Written by Meraj Chhaya on June 25, 2007 – 7:15 pm

Don’t worry, he’s not guarding the the iPhones.

The first shipments of Apple’s iPhone arrived on Sunday at airports across the country, according to AppleInsider, just in time for the start of iPhone Week.

Apparently the iPhones were shipped from Hong Kong to several major cities in the U.S. via air freight in order to clear customs ahead of Friday’s expected launch. AppleInsider also reported that armed security guards greeted the arrival of the shipments, a practice usually reserved for shipments of diamonds and other more traditional baubles.

It’s an open question as to how many iPhones will be available for sale this weekend. Some analysts are expecting Apple to sell as many as 200,000 this weekend during the first two days the product is on sale. Others are predicting less, but we’re already seeing potential iPhone customers making arrangements for line standers outside Apple and AT&T stores.

Written by Meraj Chhaya on June 24, 2007 – 11:36 pm

Nokia N82

Nokia N82 (coming soon)
The Nokia N82 has a 5 megapixel camera with Xenon flash and auto-focus Carl Zeiss lens. It’s a 3G phone with HSDPA, quad-band, Wi-fi and GPS.

Nokia N81

Nokia N81 (coming soon)
The Nokia N81 is a slider phone with a huge 8GB of internal memory, a large 2.4-inch display, quad-band, 3G, HSDPA, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0. It has a 2 megapixel camera and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Samsung F520

Samsung F520 (coming soon)
At first glance the Samsung F520 looks very impressive. It has a large display with a touch screen flash interface, reminiscent of the Apple iPhone or LG Prada. The 3 inch display works in portrait or landscape mode and has a high resolution of 480×272 pixels. But that’s not all. The F520 has another trick up its sleeve! It has a unique two-way slide mechanism. Open in portrait mode to reveal a numeric keypad and a D-pad with a few navigation buttons. Open it sideways, in landscape mode, and you’ll find a QWERTY keyboard.

The tech specs for the Samsung F520 are as equally impressive as it’s party trick. It has 3G with HSDPA for high speed data downloads. It has an advanced media player supporting all major audio and video formats. It also has a 3 megapixel camera with flash - and that huge display will be great for viewing photos and video clips.

Samsung F510

Samsung F510 (coming soon)
The Samsung F510 is an unusual dual-faced phone with a twist - literally. Almost identical to the Samsung F500, the F510 adds DVB-H - a mobile version of freeview digital TV. Let’s begin with the dual-face. One side of the F510 there is an music and video player with a multi-directional pad and a large 2.4 inch colour display, which can be viewed in both portrait and landscape modes. On the other side is a much smaller colour display, a numeric keypad and some navigation keys as you’d expect to see on a traditional mobile phone. The Samsung F510 has a twist design so it can be placed on a flat surface for viewing videos in landscape mode. It’s only 11mm thick and still packs in a display on each side plus a massive 400MB of internal memory, which is impressive stuff.

The Samsung F510 is an extremely versatile media player. It can handle all popular audio and video files such as MP3, WMA, MPEG4, WMV, H.264 and even Divx video clips. There’s a USB connector for transferring files from your PC or laptop and the F510 also squeezes in a 2 megapixel camera and 3G. This really is an impressive spec for such a tiny phone.

Nokia 6110 Navigator takes the ‘Long Way Down’ with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman

Written by Meraj Chhaya on June 24, 2007 – 4:57 pm

Mobile phone with integrated GPS and instant, easy-to-use maps, routing and navigation gets immediate test on epic journey from Scotland to Africa

Espoo, Finland - The Nokia 6110 Navigator, which began shipping this week, will have its navigation capabilities tested as it accompanies actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman as they take the "Long Way Down" to Cape Town on BMW motorcycles. With the Nokia 6110 Navigator routing the path, best friends Ewan and Charley have begun their monumental motorcycle journey from John O’Groats, Scotland to Cape Town, South Africa, with a number of stops planned along the way. Long Way Down follows on from 2004’s Long Way Round where Ewan and Charley motorbiked around the world from London to New York over 115 days.

On such an arduous motorcycle journey across some of the most testing terrain in the world, the Long Way Down team will be relying on all of the Nokia 6110 Navigator’s features to keep them on the right track, but also to meet all of their media, communication and navigational needs in one. Whether it’s checking maps, surfing the net for information, taking photos and video or just keeping in touch with their friends and family back home, the team will be able to do all of this and more with the Nokia 6110 Navigator.

"During Long Way Round we kept getting lost and had to rely on anything from landmarks to advice from locals in all sorts of languages to find our way, so getting a proper navigational tool for Long Way Down was a real priority" said Ewan McGregor. "We’ve been playing around with the Nokia 6110 Navigator before setting off and it’s just what we need to stay on track".

The Nokia 6110 Navigator brings together GPS (Global Positioning System) and AGPS (Assisted Global Positioning System) functionality with always-on mobile connectivity in a feature-rich, compact device. Operating on WCDMA 2100 and GSM 850/900/1800/1900 networks, the Nokia 6110 Navigator will be available in shops across Europe, Asia, Middle East, and selected countries in Latin America.
