Videocon to buy Motorola’s Phone Business?

Written by sampdoria on April 3, 2008 – 8:06 pm

Well, we have news everywhere about India’s companies trying to buy this and that. The lastest one was Tata Motors acquiring Ford, Jaguar and Land Rover.

But this one, is different. You may ask why…but it is simple to answer: Motorola was separating the mobile phones’ business from the big company making a Spin-off. But as I have said to you, a spin-off is always seen with good eyes from the stock holders, but when comes the reports from the best analysts we can have a better dimension of what could be happening and if it would be good or not. As we saw from my last post, this Spin-Off could be a complete disaster.

But today, a company that I have never heard before, named Videocon, is intended to buy Motorola’s phone business. Now, this is better than a spin-off, this is better than anything (at least for the stock holders), because it makes the market move, and UP (for the two companies)

But, when Motorola said that they weren’t interested in "this", the vitality of this session isn’t being too good to Motorola. But in the other hand Videocon was bumping on the last Indian session.

You can see a nice report of Videocon right here, and quotes from Motorola here.

Here is the graph from today, just to show that the market isn’t too interested in these things, at this time. Anyway, we might not have yet reached the climax (just maybe……)

Samsung’s own Touch UI is Instinct UI

Written by Meraj Chhaya on April 3, 2008 – 4:11 pm

Samsung rarely displays S60 phones, and S60 Touch UI might not be a success on their side, so this time they opted for Instinct UI.
From the video, the device looks rather small, or maybe Chris Ziegler from Engadget has gigantic fingers.

What we can clearly see is the web browser, and the usual finger-scrolling that we saw in devices such as Apple iPhone and Nokia N800. The main options on the sides are the Zoom buttons, but what I really wanted to see is the keyboard, but I believe we will be in for more videos and adverts once it launches itself into the market.

Bling bling - Louis Vuitton teaches them how to shine

Written by Meraj Chhaya on April 3, 2008 – 4:03 pm

In specifications terms, the Louis V2 isn’t the king of them all, but when it comes to bling, this phone shines the whole day. No 3G, a simple 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, microSD slot, and MP3 playback are the only functions. Besides being a probable limited edition, the phone is only Dual-Band. Believe it or not, it’s not a Louis Vuitton, it’s a China phone.

Videocon Group interested in taking over Motorola’s cellphone dept

Written by Meraj Chhaya on April 3, 2008 – 2:52 pm

Motorola’s spinoff that MH spoke about in a recent post, separated its handset business from the rest of the company. Videocon Group from Aurangabad, India has become interested in acquiring the handset department at Motorola.

Chairman Venugopal Dhoot has confirmed this, but declined to comment in the financial terms as it has not been decided yet. On the Motorola side, Mary Lamb, who is a spokesperson for Motorola in Hong Kong, declined to comment on Videocon’s bid for Motorola.

Videocon has had a rejected bid for South Korea’s Daewoo Electronics, where it struggled to raise the $700 million required to propose. The bid for Motorola should be far more challenging as Videocon is valued at $2-$2.5 billion, while Motorola is valued at $3.8 billion. Last year the Videocon Group has a turnover of $4.7 billion.

I expect more comments from our financial advisor MH later during the day.

Nokia tackles the music market with one more Music Store

Written by Meraj Chhaya on April 3, 2008 – 2:08 pm

Offering local based online shop is a good initiative, when you consider that you can download any local and international track on the move, and Nokia is making use of that at it fullest, with the launch of the new Nokia Music Store of Ireland.

Nokia is providing over 2,5 million tracks from both Irish and International artists, but the prices seem quite strange, and maybe exaggerated: 1 Euro for each individual track, and 10 Euros for a monthly subscription fee for music streaming to PC. With these kinds of prices, more people will opt for illegal P2P downloads or the Apple iTunes music store.

I hope this also helps the "Comes with Music" campaign, and that it provides more choice of download to those lucky ones who are offered one year of free music downloads.

"As the world’s largest manufacturer of digital music players, millions of consumers from around the world can enjoy our music experiences," said Mr Alan O’Hara, General Manager of Nokia Ireland. "We’re dedicated to delivering the best music experience, based on products and services that offer consumers choice, relevance, and ease of use. We also want to be more locally relevant than any other digital music store in Ireland. "

Nokia is celebrating the launch by giving away 24,000 free music vouchers for the store at NokiaFreeMusic.ie - each worth from EUR 1 to EUR 10.  Everyone who claims a voucher at NokiaFreeMusic.ie is also entered to win a Nokia N95 8GB device, Bluetooth speakers, plus one year of unlimited streaming music from the Nokia Music Store. Nokia Music Store will also offer a free track of the week every week.
