Kevin Martin, FCC chairman, announced on Friday that there will be a vote to decide whether the 25MHz spectrum in the 2155-2180 MHz advanced wireless services band, or AWS III, will be auctioned or not.

“We’ve had a variety of proposals that had come into the commission originally where some people wanted us to give them the spectrum,” said the chairman in a press conference. There is a time limit of four years to provide a free service to 50% of the population, and to 95% by the end of the licence.

There was a much hyped 62MHz of the 700MHz spectrum auction earlier this year, of which Verizon and AT&T won the most important frequencies.

There is no information whether the 700MHz D Block re-auction will be affected by this new auction, or if this auction is really going to happen, as the vote hasn’t been set.
