HTC Touch Diamond launch in South Africa
Written by Meraj Chhaya on June 14, 2008 – 7:24 pm
It does look like a Photoshop image, but it’s actually a bad capture by the N95 under smoke conditions. HTC and Leaf (distributor in Southern Africa) unveiled the HTC Touch Diamond at Catwalk in Fourways, South Africa. Following short addresses to the media, there was a party.
We will publish our hands-on the Touch Diamond after the weekend, as well as display the fantastic launch presentation based on a “Mission Impossible” theme, and in my opinion, it’s a great marketing demonstration not only to the media, but to the many investors present at the launch as well. Do subscribe to our RSS feed and be notified of our in-depth coverage of the event, as well as an unexpected information disclosure by HTC’s General Manager.
The press release after the jump, and a sneak onto our hands-on article.
A NEW AGE FOR MOBILE PHONEs Begins
The Touch Diamond is a breakthrough in size, style, connectivity and overall user experience.
JOHANNESBURG — June 12, 2008 — Born from a uniquely advanced heritage and a desire to merge design and simplicity, HTC Corp., a global leader in mobile phone innovation and design, today unveiled its new flagship phone, the HTC Touch Diamond.
Delivering unmistakable style and meticulous craftsmanship the HTC Touch Diamond is defined by its compact size, distinctive style, revolutionary Internet accessibility and its new captivating 3D touch interface - TouchFLO 3D. The result is an uncompromising mobile phone that sets a new benchmark in phone sophistication and changes consumer’s previous expectations.
“Today we mark a new era in mobile phone evolution, an era where beauty and size integrate with uncompromising innovation at broadband speeds,” said Kevin Chen, General Manager of HTC MEA and CIS. “The HTC Touch Diamond will make browsing the Web and using Web-enabled applications just as practical and easy to use as making calls.”
Get in touch with a new dimension
HTC has taken a gigantic leap forward in terms of touch screen innovation with the introduction of its new 3D touch interface, TouchFLO 3D. TouchFLO 3D provides animated access to people, messaging, email, photos, music, weather reports and much more. In addition to this, HTC is introducing a new, hi-tech, touch-sensitive control for interacting with the Touch Diamond.
Mobile Internet is now even more fun than before
With the introduction of the Touch Diamond, HTC delivers an entirely new mobile Internet experience that utilizes broadband-like speeds with HSDPA 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA wireless connectivity. Committed to improving Web browsing, HTC provides a new customized mobile Web browser that facilitates easy viewing and effortless navigation of Websites through their brilliant design. As part of this browsing experience users can zoom and pan Websites with one-hand, as well as automatically view optimized content that has been created specifically to fit the display. Turning the device sideways automatically rotates the web page view from a portrait to landscape view.
In addition to Web browsing, the Touch Diamond includes a new customized, HTC-developed, YouTube application to allow viewing a variety of video content generated by the user, as well as utilizing Google Maps for mapping and traffic data.
Unrivaled style and size
The Touch Diamond is crafted with precision so that it fits comfortably in a user’s hand without compromising features or functionality. Featuring a combination of contrasting design elements in metal and geometric shapes, the Touch Diamond has the ability to complement the individual style of the user.
Supreme innovation
The Touch Diamond delivers an unmatched combination of features and functionality that set a new standard for integrating mobile phone innovation into a small package. The 2.8-inch display screen provides near-print quality viewing that enables clear Internet browsing and viewing of photographs. The built-in camera includes an optical auto-focus lens that ensures that clarity of photos taken. Advanced wireless and auto sensor screen pivoting are just some of the features that make the Touch Diamond experience exceptional.
Availability
Like the rest of the world, the HTC Touch Diamond™ will be available to customers across all major African carriers in July. The North American and Latin American versions of the Touch Diamond will be available in the second half of 2008.
“The phone has been so well received internationally, that it has created much hype locally as South Africans anticipate the Touch Diamond’s arrival. Both customers and media have expressed tremendous enthusiasm, knowing that Leaf and HTC have something exciting up their sleeve,” says Quinton Leigh, MD of Leaf International Communications. “South African’s are aware of our strong ties to HTC and so have come to expect great things from this relationship.”
