MTN first in the breadvertising world
Written by Meraj Chhaya on July 23, 2008 – 4:27 pm
For once, I woke up early and caught my mother cooking breakfast for us. As I was sitting to the table, I saw a bread packet, but not any other bread packet. It had MTN adverts. For those of you that don’t know, MTN is one of the biggest mobile phone networks in the world, and is from South Africa.
There are two yellow adverts on the packet: one says something in Zulu which I believe has something to do with “Make your mother smile”, and the second advert, in English, reads “Recharge now with the R5 voucher and put a smile on someone’s face”.
This is publicity of their new recharge voucher, and it perfectly makes sense. R5 is about US$0.67, which is flippin’ cheap for airtime, and they are advertising it on a necessity which is bread (which is also more expensive than the recharge voucher, at R7,99), a type of food that everyone eats, from the poor to the rich, and the R5 voucher will be wanted mostly by the lower income population. Very clever marketing, MTN.
Previously the R5 was only available from Cell C, which probably gained more popularity between the low-income households, of which there are many; this is South Africa guys.

Control your phone with your eyes
Written by Meraj Chhaya on July 23, 2008 – 3:03 pm
Dr. Masaaki Fukumoto, Executive Research Engineer at NTT DOCOMO’s Frontier Technology Research Group can be seen testing the future technology (can’t wait to get that funny thing on my head), which allows a user to control a device with his eyes. That’s right, with the eyes only.
DOCOMO wishes to break the barrier between humans and machines, and introduce the wearable computers concept to the world. Of course, now you know how Terminator began. Enough of sarcasm, let’s hear what the doctors have to say:
In the case of the headset, for example, he has adapted a medical device for measuring eye response, called an electrooculogram (EOG), which uses sensors to measure the electrical potential of the cornea and track where the eye is moving. Besides operating a music player, the technology can be used to direct headset-mounted cameras to follow the eyes and show what the wearer is looking at.

Dumbest things you can do with a phone
Written by Meraj Chhaya on July 23, 2008 – 3:02 pm
Sorry, I just couldn’t help it. As (normal) humans we have to maintain a certain level of insanity, therefore I am just contributing to the society. Here it goes:
- Accidentally lock your car key in your car: Call your family members at home and call them to press the spare remote at home and just aim your mobile phone on your car.
- Check for faulty microwave: Put a mobile phone inside your microwave and give it a ring. The oven is designed to keep microwaves in, so if it rings, you may well be leaking waves all over the place, and should get it checked. There is a small gap for waves to escape, but it should at least dramatically limit the signal.
- Start training for the mobile phone throwing world championships in Sweden. This started in 2000, and marks are awarded for distance and creative choreography. 95.53m is the unofficial world record, thrown in England in 2007. The minimum weight is 220 grams, so don’t try and throw one lighter than this, as that would just be silly.

Sony Ericsson officially announces W902 (Patti)
Written by Meraj Chhaya on July 23, 2008 – 9:46 am
The Sony Ericsson Walkman Patti was a very superficially leaked device, but now we have the official release, specifications, and release date as well.
The W902 is the first Walkman with a 5 megapixel camera, and by the looks, it seems like a new W810, which was quite successful. To complete the device there has been included an 8GB memory card, although it falls short of its competitors which have 16GB memory and a memory card slot.
Another highlight to the device is its Mineral Glass display cover, which is scratch-proof, and “Outstanding music sound – Clear Stereo + Clear Bass+ premium headphones = clear audio experience”.
You can check more details, such as videos, at the Sony Ericsson Reveals website, and read the press release.
Images, and specifications and more after the jump.
