Samsung J700 contributes to Soccer fund
Written by Meraj Chhaya on August 29, 2008 – 1:10 am
Samsung Mobile has partnered up with Play Soccer South Africa to contribute for the development of young soccer players in South Africa. The campaign is entitled “NextHero” and is focused on improving the bond that soccer creates with young people.
Everything a Samsung J700 is sold, the manufacturer will donate a portio of the revenue to the campaign. To further motivate the public, Samsung has also created an in-store competition where J700 buyers stand the chance to win a trip to London to see Samsung’s greatest soccer hero, Didier Drogba, play a match for Chelsea against arch rivals, Arsenal on 30th November 2008.
Two soccer greats have also become involved in the program as coaches. Shaun Bartlett(a Bafana Bafana veteran) and Itumeleng Khune (a rising star on the Bafana Bafana team) will be playing the role of coach for the next two months (September and October). Both men have expressed a passion for soccer development at a grassroots level and are proud to be involved in this program. In a brief interview, Itumeleng spoke of his own experiences as a young soccer player. He believes that children need strong role models and mentors, and we heartily agree. It is a privilege to have the involvement of these soccer stars.

South Africa to allow phones on the air
Written by Meraj Chhaya on August 29, 2008 – 12:55 am
South African Airways will appeal to the Civil Aviation Authority of South Africa to allow mobile phones use in Flight Mode, as well as allowing mobile phone calls and WiFi connections via the installation of a server on SAA aircraft.
SAA had requested once that customers be allowed to use mobile phones in Flight Mode, but the request was denied, according to Sarah Uys, manager of corporate communications at SAA.
Uys further explained that “The use of cellphones and the Internet through wireless technology on board aircraft in SA is regulated by the SA CAA, it has taken the view that our legislation does not allow the use of such technology, while in flight, and thus it is illegal to make use of cellphones and other unapproved transmitting devices. SAA was the first local airline to apply for our customers to use the ‘flight mode’ of some cellphones, but we were turned down.”
The FCC, USA’s communications regulator, has already approved in-flight calls from mobile phones, and many countries allow them as well.

Regulator orders the removal of iPhone ad
Written by Meraj Chhaya on August 29, 2008 – 12:36 am
Two consumers complained to the Advertising Standards Authority of the UK that the Apple iPhone 3G’s TV advertisement was misleading (you can view it here), as it boasted about the iPhone’s web capabilities, while the phone couldn’t even play Java or Flash, which are common in websites.
The publicity video stated that “all parts of the internet are on the iPhone“, while this isn’t true. Apple fought back, and here’s what ASA quotes from them:
They believed the ad was not about technical details or the functionalities or plug-ins that were available on the iPhone, but the varied websites that users could visit and utilize. They said all the websites featured in the ad were available on the iPhone and were shown as they would be seen by the user. They said none of the content in the ad was Flash or Java based and the ad did not mention any other technical capabilities of the iPhone. Apple believed that it was clear that the reference in the ad to “all parts of the internet” referred to internet site availability, not to every aspect of functionality available on every website. They said the decision not to enable some proprietary software would not affect the ability of the iPhone user to access any part of the internet, only their ability to access particular content that used third party technology.
It didn’t work with the regulator, and ASA decided that the “The ad breached CAP (Broadcast) TV Advertising Standards Code rules 5.1 (Misleading advertising), 5.2.1 (Evidence) and 5.2.2 (Implications). “, and that “ad must not be broadcast again in its current form. “
Now will you include Flash on your phones, Apple?

Written by Meraj Chhaya on August 29, 2008 – 12:25 am
What you would expect from Adobe PhotoShop isn’t there. The mobile version of graphic designers’ favourite graphic editing application is going to be simply an multimedia sharing facility, according to Cellpassion.
Adobe currently offers only Flash and PDF readers for mobile devices, and its announcement of releasing a PhotoShop application for mobile phones couldn’t been a surprise to anyone, as these devices are constantly improving their components speed and capabilities. What surprised the mobile community is that PhotoShop Mobile only enables you to upload photos to a community at www.photoshop.com
PhotoShop Mobile Beta version will be available in September. Who knows what features will be added…
