WATERLOO, Canada - Crackberry reports that Kik is planning to launch a Digital Rights Management-free music download application that is designed for BlackBerry smartphones.
Users that have an iPod and iTunes have been able to synchronize their music through Media Sync in the BlackBerry Desktop manager. The limitation has been DRM, any DRM-controlled download from iTunes will not sync with any other device but the iPod, registered to that instance of iTunes. Most of the downloads from iTunes are DRM-controlled, preventing piracy and ensuring that the artist and the distribution company get their share of the digital sale. This means that having the BlackBerry and all one's tunes in it were mutually exclusive. Until now.
Kik is planning to launch in Canada in January, and shortly thereafter in the USA. The application will include a desktop manager and the app for the BlackBerry device. Users will be able to order music and other content from their BlackBerry devices, syncing with the desktop. There is also an option to listen to a song for free a few times without purchase, but there are ads involved.
