Remember my three previous posts on this subject? They were back in February! Just to remind you, here's Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. They were all written on PhoneReport v1.0.
Now I bring you the latest Part 4, although they are quite old S60 3rd applications, and I didn't update them. What counts is that I use them. So here are the five applications that I will review today:
- FlipSilent
- Keylock
- Taskman
- Smartmovie
- eBuddy
I will show you few screenshots of each, develop on them, and provide you with a download link, whenever possible. Not all are freeware, but if they're here, they are usually worth the price (I don't go around buying junk).
First up is FlipSilent, the application that made Tong Ren famous, we even interviewed him as were very excited for the applications and his talents. At the time there was some controversy of whether he stole the idea from Samir Oueldi, who created a similar application, but he firmly affirmed that he got the idea from S60 Touch UI video shown at last year's Smartphones Show.
What the application basically does is sense with the accelerometer if you are turning the phone around, and then execute a command.
The commands are:
- Mute or hang up incoming call
- Change profile
- Stop alarm, or snooze
- Auto-start option
You can download the application at FlipSilent International. Here's a video of FlipSilent in action.
Moving onto Handy Keylock. This application does what it exactly the title says. It locks your keypad. How convenient, so let's move onto the next application...
Ermm, maybe not. The Nokia N95 doesn't have a automatic keylock timer, so Keylock acts like one. You simply input the timeframe desired, and if you wish, an alternative keylock combination.
You can download Handy Keylock from Epocware.
Handy Taskman has to be the best application ever written. It replaces your S60 task switcher with a full screen in-depth User Interface with "widgets" which show the date, the amount of RAM left, internal memory, and memory card status. You can also search for application from within the Taskman.
Thankfully there is an auto-start button, so it boots up with your phone. This is a double-must-must-have application!
You can download Handy Taskman from Epocware.
Next up is the infamous Smartmovie. This media player must have been with S60 since forever! I remember it when I first got my Nokia 6600, it was the best application one could have if you wanted to show-off that your phone can play high-quality movies.
Well, and that's its function, play movies from various codecs in high quality. Anything from short videos to full-length videos, from landscape to portrait, from subtitles to DTS - nah, I'm kidding, no DTS audio (yet).
Best thing is that Smartmovie comes with a PC converter, so you don't have to go on a frantic Google search.
Here's the features, according to them:
- Standard AVI format, allowing you to preview converted files on your PC.
- Player uses the phone screen in portrait or landscape mode, utilizing full screen size of the device.
- Rescaling of video to utilize full-screen area.
- PC converter allows you to split video file into multiple segments, so that it fits onto your memory card, if not entire, then cut to more parts - you may watch your favorite video in parts, e.g. while traveling to work/school.
- Support for subtitles - allowing you to watch movies in different languages.
- Friendly PC converter - preview videos on PC, select parts you want to convert, alter quality.
- Supports DirectShow codecs, so you may use video codecs downloadable from the internet.
- Very fast conversion; on standard PC conversion is 5x faster than video clip playback time. You'll convert entire movie in just a few minutes
- Bicubic rescale algorithm shrinks video to small screen size in best possible quality.
- Adjustable quality parameters for video and audio streams, allowing tuning target video to your needs.
- Customizable video Player (brightness, language, volume, and more).
You can download Smartmovie from Lonely Cat Games.
And now, finally is eBuddy. The reason I got myself this applications is that I needed a quality MSN and GTalk Instant Messaging client.
Unfortunately, there are no VoIP options, nevermind videoconferencing. You can also connect to AIM, and Yahoo! Messenger. You can choose to keep your contacts divided in Online/Offline, or keep them in the groups they are.
You can download eBuddy from its official website.
I will continue this mini review series posting atleast once a week.
