03072008652 800x600 300x261 N82 vs N95 vs K850i vs G800 final camera testWe have put these four phones in every important test we could think of, but what we really want to do is focus on the camera (excuse the pun), and for that, we have few more tests left.

On the previous part of this review, we spoke about the artificial light shots, and the medium distance shots. Now we are going for the most interesting bit: the macro, or close-up shot, and the night shots, so that we can test the focal length and the flash.

You will be surprised at some of the findings, and at last, you will find out which phone has the best camera.

Please click on the pictures to admire them in all their high-resolution splendour, and please note that the order is always from the left: Nokia N82, Nokia N95, Sony Ericsson K850i Cyber-shot, Samsung SGH-G800. Ready to see which phone has the best 5 megapixel camera? Go ahead and enjoy!

The first captured images are done in close-up mode, with every other setting in automatic mode. The day conditions are very sunny, and the objects in focus are about five flowers, with green plants surrounding them. The N95's capture seems to be the best with excellent focus and great colours, while the G800 really did badly with extra light sensitivity. Let's look at the details:

The excerpts confirm that the N95 has indeed the best focusing and colour recognizing capability, atleast in this picture. If you look closely, you can say that the focusing of all phones is similar, but it's only the colour that changes. Remember that usually the more you tell your phone, the better pictures it will bring, so let's see what it does when we tell all the phones that there is daylight:

Focus doesn't change much in the picture, but we can now understand that the N82 is focusing on a single flower, while the N95 keeps a sort of virtual multi-focus. Once again, the N95 has more accurate colours, while the G800 overdoes the colours and increases the lightning so much that you cannot understand the details in the pictures. The K850's focus is rather off-target, and its colours are dull, so you could say it's somewhere between the N82 and G800's picture.

The close up mode comparisons with the automatic mode can tell that in the daylight mode, the light intensity is slightly reduced, and you can only tell that this is good when you compare the full pictures, and not the excerpts. The images really don't change much, and sometimes it's better to keep those with automatic white balance, and not in daylight mode. Perhaps daylight mode is better for environments with huge amounts of light, such as a beach in a sunny summer day.

close up sharpness 100 full N82 vs N95 vs K850i vs G800 final camera test

Now to the close up modes with sharpness at 100 in case of the Samsung G800 shot, or soft in case of the Nokia N82 and N95. The K850i doesn't have sharpness setting so we didn't include it in this test. I am however confused if the G800's 100 setting means soft or hard, I just selected the best from the two.
What this affects most is the focus, and undoubtedly, the G800 is the winner, although the light intensity still ruins the image. The shot captured by the Nokia phones is of lower quality than in automatic mode, so maybe we shouldn't touch in the sharpness feature. Let's see what the excerpts tell us:

close up mode sharp excerpt 2 N82 vs N95 vs K850i vs G800 final camera test

close up mode sharp excerpt 3 N82 vs N95 vs K850i vs G800 final camera test

My conclusion after these three excerpts is that the focus on automatic mode is far better than in sharpness mode. Easier work for us! My final thoughts of close-up mode is that you should keep every other setting in automatic, the phones usually produced poorer pictures with manual white balance and sharpness, besides the K850i.

The best phone you can use for macro shots in daylight is the Nokia N95. Let's see the night macro shots...This one should be an easy guess.

The K850i and the N82 produced the best images, while the N95's shot is comparable with the G800's one. The K850i did beat the N82, even though the Xenon flash tube is smaller, and the N95 equals the G800, even though the G800 has a Xenon flash and the N95 a LED flash.

The excerpt quickly reveals that the K850i's capture has a far more natural colour than the N82's shot, and that the N95 can't focus at all! The images were captured in automatic mode.

The above image is the same object, but I told the camera that it was a macro. There doesn't seem to be much of an improvement, the G800's capture actually got worse. Let's look at the excerpts:

close up mode night excerpt N82 vs N95 vs K850i vs G800 final camera test

The images just got worse, refer to the N82's image. You should keep your settings as automatic when capturing night images. The K850i is the big winner here.

What happened to the N82? It didn't win the close-up mode test, nor the night close-up test...The N82 did do quite well in the second part of our review, but no phone is perfect. The N95 and the K850i did the best here, while the G800 remains in the last position. For our last part of the review, we will show you all the images, and give you our conclusion, so stay tuned, and for that, subscribe to our RSS feed.

Beautiful, your comment was unbiassed. I appreciate that. Nowadays, a lot of people posted the photos by enhancing the setting of N82 while degrading the function of the other phones. I was very pissed with that, thank you sir for the review. I hope there are more of editor like you so that innocent consumers will not be cheated.
