Nokia's flagship phones have been defined by the model N9x since the time NSeries was made commercially available. The N96 was expected to live up to the NSeries reputation as well.

Nokia got itself a tough crowd when it came up with every-enthusiast's dream phone. Not continuing to revolutionize the market every time it released a flagship device, had everyone's eyebrows raised to a matter that might actually have a simple explanation: the market might not need a revolution.

Like any other company that runs on investors, Nokia looks for profits, rather than to please the ultimate consumer. Addressing the market in general is far more important than having a phone that has it all. The Nokia N96 was designed to be a market winner, and not another N95. Nokia actually has a reputation problem when it comes to software reliability. The N95, just like many other phones that run on the S60 software platform, contained too many bugs that became insupportable to the user, and only after a long waiting period, they updated it with bug-free software.

It is important to actually look at the N96's competitors, all of them seem to have something that beats the N96, either feature-wise, or just in design terms. The Apple iPhone, Samsung i900 Omnia, and Samsung i8510 INNOV8, all have 16GB of built-in memory. The Samsung i8510 INNOV8 and the Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot have an 8 megapixel camera. The Samsung i900 Omnia and the Apple iPhone have a touchscreen display. The N96 in its exclusivity, has a kickstand, a 2.8" display, which is smaller than most of its competitors, it also has 16GB of built-in memory with support for a microSD memory card, a 3.5mm audiovisual jack for its multimedia-focused properties, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, and a mediocre 950mAh battery.
