If you remember the Nokia Aeon concept, which can divide it's touchscreen into different places, you will notice how this patent can become a reality, although in this simple diagram it looks incredibly weird. The design is called Jacobs Ladder flipping hinge arrangement. Mr Jacobs' imagination might lead to a huge phone, especially if you consider that the device is supposed to open up like a Communicator.
