Samsung Omnia i8910 HD live hands-on imageJOHANNESBURG, South Africa - The Samsung i8910 HD was launched at the Mobile World Congress 2009 in February as one of the most sophisticated smartphones at the event. At this stage in the year, this device is available in the market, and so are its close competitors, which is leaving consumers undecided.

The phone has a 3.7" touchscreen (the largest one of its kind on a phone), HSPA connectivity, Wi-Fi with DLNA support, Bluetooth, A-GPS and digital compass, USB connectivity, 8GB or 16GB internal memory (two versions of the handset), 256MB RAM, a 600MHz processor, an 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording, and TV-out capability.

Samsung has ensured that its proprietary user interface TouchWIZ runs on the S60 software platform, which is the one chosen for this smartphone. With these means, the South Korean manufacturer maintains its signature, and also the control over how the consumer is approached at first.

Market placement

The Sony Ericsson W995 Walkman, Nokia N97, LG KM900 Arena, HTC Touch HD, iPhone 3G S, and even the upcoming Sony Ericsson Satio are the close competitors to the Omnia HD.

The W995 is mostly a music-oriented, non-smartphone handset, although it does have features similar to the phone being reviewed: an 8 megapixel camera, multimedia-consumer target audience, and full connectivity options. Unlike the Omnia HD, the device lacks a touchscreen display and a smartphone operating system.

The recently-reviewed N97 certainly made an impression on me, and it is a close rival to the i8910. The latter has an 8 megapixel camera versus the 5 megapixel one on the N97, a 3.7" touchscreen instead of a 3.5" one, but it lacks a QWERTY keyboard.

The LG KM900 Arena has a 5 megapixel camera, full connectivity options, and a 3" touchscreen. Even though the phone does have high-end features, they are short of what the Omnia HD offers.

The HTC Touch HD is one of the few phones with a larger display than the Omnia HD, at 3.8". It has a 5 megapixel camera, full connectivity options, and it runs on Windows Mobile 6.1. The lower-spec'd camera and different operating system differentiate it from the i8910.

The iPhone 3G S, certainly the most hyped smartphone in the market, has specifications far lower than the Omnia HD. With a 3.5" touchscreen, 16GB or 32GB internal memory (two versions of the handset), HSDPA connectivity, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a 3.2 megapixel camera, the phone may appeal to a different audience, but overall, it definitely has lower specs than the Omnia HD.
