BARCELONA, Spain - Samsung is the first well-known mobile phone manufacturer to officially announce a phone with an integrated pico projector to the market. The Samsung Show will be known as the W7900 in the US, and i7410 in Europe and other countries. The phone is scheduled to ship this summer.
With a 5 megapixel camera, 3.2" AMOLED touchscreen display, triband GSM connectivity, HSDPA, Bluetooth, FM radio, and 150MB of internal memory, the Samsung Show is more than just a simple phone with a projector inside, it's a complete high-end mobile phone. Unfortunately it is not a smartphone, although it runs Samsung's TouchWIZ user interface.
The Show is certainly bulky, most likely owing to the pico projector, which projects an image of a size between 5 to 50" at a resolution of 480x320 pixels. The image was not clear, but then again, the technology is relatively new.
The phone lacks an actual keyboard; the only keys it has below the screen are the call keys and the d-pad. The 3.2" AMOLED touchscreen display has a resolution of 240x400 pixels. Above the screen there is an ear-speaker.
The projector has 10 lumens of light intensity, and its focus can be regulated from the top of the screen.
The polished white back part of the phone contrasts against the silver metallic colour of the phone, and holds the 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash.
We were not able to handle the device for more than a few minutes, therefore we believe that the microUSB port and the volume rocker are placed at the left of the phone, while the microSD memory card slot is located at the right.
Such a new technology will surely generate a hype in the market, but the Show's dimensions will not contribute to that. The technology has yet to improve and to fit properly in a decently-sized mobile phone.
