LONDON, UK - Sony Ericsson today announced the Xperia X10, the Swedish-Japanese joint-venture's entry into the Google Android platform.
The device, which has been generating a lot of interest in the blogosphere in the last couple of months, packs most impressive hardware and software specifications.
Taking a leaf out of HTC and Motorola mobiles, Sony Ericsson has super-imposed a user interface of its own, titled the UX platform, which the manufacturer plans to incorporate across its product portfolio. As with HTC and Motorola, Sony Ericsson's UX synchronises user data seamlessly with several networking services from the web.
According to Rikko Sakaguchi, EVP and Chief Creation Officer at Sony Ericsson, "The Xperia X10 is a fantastic example of our make.believe philosophy because we are pushing the boundaries of what is possible and demonstrating that anything consumers can imagine, we can make possible. With the X10, we are raising the bar we hav e set ourselves with the entertainment-rich phones like Aino and Satio by making communication more fun and playful, multiplying and enriching opportunities to connect".

The two main features of the UX interface are the Timescape and Mediascape, signature applications developed to enhance the user experience on X1o. While Timescape synchronises all communications (Facebook, Twitter, photos, email and texts) with a contact and organises them in chronological order, Mediascape integrates media content on the phone and the web. Further ,the face recognition feature synchronises all information specific to that particular to a contact, adding to the seamless experience on X10. While the UX interface looks very impressive, the X10 will run onAndroid 1.6 and not 2.0 that has been in news in the last couple of weeks.
In addition to the Android Market, the device will also have access to Sony Ericsson's PlayNow store for users to customize their phones with apps and games. Further, Sony Ericsson's navigation service Wise Pilot will also be available (free trial) in regions presently covered by the navigation service.
Powering the graphic rich interface and web synchronisation on X10 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor. Other hardware specifications include quadband GSM and triband HSPA, a 4" capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 480x854 pixels, an 8.1 megapixel camera equipped with 16x optical zoom, autofocus, geo-tagging, face recognition, smile detection and capable of video recording; Wi-Fi, A-GPS, a 3.5mm audio jack, microUSB connectivity, Bluetooth and microSD memory card support for memory expansion.
The device will be available in two colours: Sensuous Black and Luster White, and will start shipping in the first quarter of 2010.
Price is unknown as of yet, but the X10 will surely rank amongst the best mobile phones in the world.
