Nokia N82 Black version - it’s official (again)
Written by Meraj Chhaya on March 18, 2008 – 4:08 pm

I guess we can say this is "re-officialised", the N82 Black version was spotted long ago in some websites, and it was confirmed by Nokia when some bloggers caught it in Nokia's website.
Now, Nokia officially releases it, and dedicated a press release to it. I believe they are trying to give it a second life, calling again for attention, filling the N96 waiting gap.
Nothing new on the specifications side, the N82 continues the same old story, with an improved software and looks. When I say software, I'm guessing that geotagging features will be built-in, and it will be friendlier to the Ovi platform. I might be wrong here, this is just my opinions.
What will definitely give fame to this N82 will be the Urbanista Diaries and Stavros, master of Position Art, and clear winner at Nokia for the funniest man award.
"The Nokia N82 is made for storytelling," says Juha Kokkonen, Director for Nokia Nseries devices. "As one of Nokia's leading-edge connected camera, the Nokia N82 in black captures people's journeys and discoveries. With built-in A-GPS it even helps people to find new places by pairing 'contextual' information with a wide array of connectivity features such as Wi-Fi and HSDPA. We make it easy for consumers to quickly share those moments as they happen."

Nokia Maps direct downloads
Written by Meraj Chhaya on February 23, 2008 – 11:01 am

Martin Letis has posted a great way to download the Nokia Maps directly. Personally I don’t like the Nokia MapLoader, as the downloads are extremely slow, the application is strict on the Map downloads, and there is low functionality.
It seems that Martin agrees with me, so he went for a search on an alternate way to download the maps. He analyzed the HTTP traffic and found out what the GET requests were. He then parsed the HEX strings and got the Maps’ numbers. With this, you can just download them with a HTTP browser that supports downloads.
Inspired by this, Diabo, also know as 666, posted all the links on his website as well as few simple steps:
Run Nokia Maps on your phone once before you add any maps. This will create the required folder structure on your memory card.
Download, unzip, and drop into the appropriate folders on your memory card. On my Nokia the folder structure is cities with a subfolder called diskcache filled with subfolders called 0 to 9 and a to f, i.e. /cities/diskcache/0 to /cities/diskcache/f.
You can download maps for entire continents, individual countries, or individual regions within some countries. Download sizes range from one megabyte (Gibraltar) to over a gigabyte (europe or america). You’ll need a 4 GB card to fit the entire planet.
All links look like http://static.s2g.gate5.de/maploaderzip/0.0.9h/*.zip, where * is a number of two to seven digits. If a map doesn’t work properly on your phone (e.g. street names appearing at the wrong place), copy the URL into the address bar of your browser, change the URL to http://static.s2g.gate5.de/maploaderzip/0.0.8h/*.zip or http://static.s2g.gate5.de/maploaderzip/0.0.7h/*.zip, and try again.

Nokia 6210 Navigator: The real Navigator
Written by Meraj Chhaya on February 18, 2008 – 3:50 pm

Nokia managed to cram all the features a good GPS device should have onto a phone, but might have missed few details.
I will go straight to the disadvantages: The battery, BL-5F 3.7V 950 mAh, isn't enough for a good GPS device, unless Nokia managed to tweak their software so that the GPS doesn't suck up much power. On phones like N95, even on the latest firmware, the GPS can make a fully charged battery go to empty in few hours.
The Orientation features are smartly included in the phone, with a compass and an accelerometer if you plan to use the GPS while walking. According to Nokia, you can combine with an 'accelerometer' which measures changes in direction and orientation, and the built-in compass makes it easy to follow the map when strolling about on foot. When turning the device, the map automatically maintains its orientation.
Nokia didn't seem to include a TV-out functionality for the Navigator, most people like me might like to connect the device to a 7" car display instead of focusing on a 2.4" display with QVGA resolution.
Besides these little bad points, I was very happy with the device. There seems to be a GPS key on the top plaform of the slider, which is extremely useful for people who mainly use the phone for this features, or even for sports such as Geocaching.
"The personal navigation market is expanding rapidly and mobile phone navigation is its fastest growing area. According to recent market research by Canalys, over 60% of mobile phone users are keen to have navigation on their phones," says Markku Suomi, the head of Nokia's Connect device category. "The Nokia 6210 Navigator offers the next generation in mobile navigation to a broad consumer base. Mobile phone users around the world will be able to enjoy the benefits of navigation with a device that not only navigates, but also communicates."
A-GPS is included, and for this and for other data needs, there is Dual band HSDPA and Quad band EDGE.
The camera has 3.2 megapixels or resolution, and video recording at 640x480 (VGA) is possible at 15fps.
On the connectivity side, there is no WiFi but there is Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP support.
The phone is powered by the latest Symbian OS9.3 with S60 3rd edition, Feature Pack 2, and on the hardware side, there is a Single ARM11 with 369MHz and 64MB of RAM, of which only 20MB is available to the user.
