01_n6110_navigator_lowres 550 millions GPS-enabled phones to be shipped

According to ABI research, 550 million GPS-enabled phones will be shipped by 2012, this is fuelled by navigation convergence from GPS devices to phones, Geotagging, and other applications which require the use of a GPS receiver and empower the use of a mobile phone, such as Nokia Sports Tracker.

Nokia N82 Black version - it’s official (again)

Written by Meraj Chhaya on March 18, 2008 – 4:08 pm

n8204lowresds5 Nokia N82 Black version - its official (again)

I guess we can say this is "re-officialised", the N82 Black version was spotted long ago in some websites, and it was confirmed by Nokia when some bloggers caught it in Nokia's website.

Now, Nokia officially releases it, and dedicated a press release to it. I believe they are trying to give it a second life, calling again for attention, filling the N96 waiting gap.
Nothing new on the specifications side, the N82 continues the same old story, with an improved software and looks. When I say software, I'm guessing that geotagging features will be built-in, and it will be friendlier to the Ovi platform. I might be wrong here, this is just my opinions.

What will definitely give fame to this N82 will be the Urbanista Diaries and Stavros, master of Position Art, and clear winner at Nokia for the funniest man award.

"The Nokia N82 is made for storytelling," says Juha Kokkonen, Director for Nokia Nseries devices. "As one of Nokia's leading-edge connected camera, the Nokia N82 in black captures people's journeys and discoveries. With built-in A-GPS it even helps people to find new places by pairing 'contextual' information with a wide array of connectivity features such as Wi-Fi and HSDPA. We make it easy for consumers to quickly share those moments as they happen."

N95 expresses the beauty within

Written by Meraj Chhaya on March 9, 2008 – 7:23 pm

The camera of the N95 is far from dead. This is shown every few months on James Burland's website, Nokia Creative, but let me share some of my little captures that the magnificent 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens equipped N95 let me take.

You will see pictures in the night, with extreme light, during dawn or sunrise, during daylight, in different angles, with water, in sunset, and big landscapes. Obviously I'm not a big photographer, but you can get a perspective of what wonders an average Joe can achieve with a camera always in his pocket. I resized all pictures so that they fit to my bandwidth limit, but you can clearly see how powerful the Nokia N95 is. The only thing missing here for me is the capture timing, I can't ever capture still waves, and I hope this feature is added in next phones.

Nokia's upcoming flagship phone, the Nokia N96 won't have as many picture features as it will be focused on video recording, but when the time is right, don't forget to share your views on it at Nokia N96 Blog and especially at the forum. For this picture, the right thread to kindly post your views, is this one.

First three pictures are captured in a club, where there is a swimming pool, a lot of lights, and reflex, you can also see the contrast of people, and how the lights affect the camera:

2319008251_3fd91a247a N95 expresses the beauty within

If you are wondering, these pictures were taken at H20 in Johannesburg, South Africa, where Paul van Dyk played his best tunes for 3 hours.

And now a simple picture that I took while the sun was rising and the clouds were expressing their colours:

2293329509_b51ea267ab N95 expresses the beauty within

The colours could have been brighter on the some clouds on the right of the image, but it seems that the main area is the center. The resolution of the camera gave the image possibility to mix diverse colours so that the clouds could have a strong texture.

Two different pictures that show you the focus on grass, sand, and even texture of the water, in the same scenario with a Jeep, which is the main object in the picture:

2294115950_5b669e0408 N95 expresses the beauty within

This is a good example of how a better lens could have given more detail to the picture, or perhaps more megapixels could have solved the problem. This is a huge steep mountain, quite a dangerous place, and the picture simply cannot tell the extent of the place, atleast that's what I think, but you can always drop your views.

2293328511_08544036cd N95 expresses the beauty within

2293328183_6157879faa N95 expresses the beauty within

The next set describes calmness, and the image detail that I like to look at is the sand and water:

2293328009_fb7936cc24 N95 expresses the beauty within

2293327843_2ccb7284f4 N95 expresses the beauty within

Quite a strange situation, where for me, the camera ignored everything and simply focused on the sun, it looks awesome, but again, I remember that in reality wasn't like that. The N95 truly knows how to enhance pictures, which is great!

2293327629_81503c870b N95 expresses the beauty within

The last set. I don't know if it needs more resolution or just a better lens, but here I think the N95 missed out the sense of texture and size:

2294113452_07cca339a6 N95 expresses the beauty within

2294113242_c2f7739e6e N95 expresses the beauty within

Last but not least, please drop your views on each and every photograph you seen in this post, in this thread.

N82 with another face: Nokia 6220 Classic

Written by Meraj Chhaya on February 18, 2008 – 3:22 pm

03_Nokia6220_classic_lowres N82 with another face: Nokia 6220 Classic

Nokia decided that the N82 could have some software tweaks, so they released it in a non-Nseries form, which we know as Nokia 6220 Classic.

The 6220 has pretty much the same hardware, the 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, the Xenon flash, QVGA resolution, although a smaller display. The N82 features a 2.4" screen while the 6220 Classic only has a 2.2".

In terms of performance, the 6220 Classic has a Single ARM 11 CPU running at 369MHz while the N82 features a Dual ARM11 CPU running at 332MHz, and it has a 3D Hardware accelerator which is missing from the 6220.

In terms of RAM, both have 128MB, although the N82 has 90MB of executable RAM, 10MB more than it's counterpart.

I was never good with cameras, but I can tell you that the 6220 Classic has a focal length of 4.6 mm while the N82 has a focal length of 5.6mm.
Both devices have video recording at 640x480 at 30fps but I believe we might get better video from the N82 as it has a 3D hardware accelerator.

The 6220 is ready to work in most parts of the world as it features Dual band HSDPA and Quad Band EDGE, against the N82 which is only Tri Band.

In terms of software the 6220 Classic is a clear winner, armed with the latest Symbian OS9.3 on a S60 UI 3rd edition with Feature Pack 2, which is dedicated to email goodies.

The pone seems to be focused on image sharing. "The Nokia 6220 classic will help web 2.0 novices and experienced bloggers snap, save and share pictures and videos easily. Saving, tagging and uploading pictures can now be done on the phone, seconds after the picture has been taken," says John Barry, Director, Connect devices, Nokia. "The Nokia 6220 classic, with its 5 megapixel camera, auto focus and xenon flash is a credible and reasonably priced alternative to single-purpose digital cameras and has the added benefit of A-GPS for location tagging, Nokia Maps and possibility to upgrade to full navigation."

03_n82_lowres N82 with another face: Nokia 6220 Classic

The N82 will last longer in terms of battery power as it's equipped with a BP-6MT 3.7V 1050 mAh which outlines the 6220's BP-5M 3.7V 900 mAh.

Both phones have A-GPS and TV-out, although 6220 Classic lacks WiFi, which is a crucial detail as we can find quite a lot of hotspots worldwide at this stage.

I'm leaving all the links from Forum Nokia intact in case the readers need them.

N78 a new N73

Written by Meraj Chhaya on February 11, 2008 – 2:35 pm

05_NokiaN78_lowres N78 a new N73

The new N73 was supposed to be N82, but I think that the N78 does practicaly the same job.

Unfortunately there is no camera improvement, it's the same old 3.2 megapixel, although there are no changes in resolutions, the digital zoom hits 20x, and thankfully there is VGA recording, but only at 15fps, which I really don't understand. The flash is still LED, I guess the Xenon will be an exclusive of the N82 on the N-series range (Yes, I do know that the 6220 classic has it).

The accelerometer wasn't implemented, and as an excuse, the Product Manager stated that it was lack of room, in which the AGPS IC was inserted.

The resolution on Nokias hasn't changed, although QVGA is still acceptable for 2.4" displays such as this one. Apparently the display is improved, as it produces a wide 160° viewing angle, and the ambient light detector is theer to improve power consumption, something that I never seen with my N95, as the display brightness seems the same the whole day.

On the network side, there is Dual HSPA and Quad band EDGE networks, but there might be need for a US version as there is a different WCDMA band, but according to the Product Manager this will take some time as there is certificate testing.

There is no built in storage such as its counterpart N96, but the usual 2GB microSD is included and it most probably supports SDHC.

  • Approx. memory capacity indication with included 2GB microSD card:
    • Video (VGA @ 15fps): up to 120 min
    • Photos (3.2 megapixel): up to 3,400 photos
    • Music (eAAC+): up to 1,500 tracks*

When I come accross the feature of Geotagging which is built in the device, we have to remember that to get a GPS lock takes atleast 30 seconds unless there is a location saved. If you want to take a photo it will eventually take some time to process as the GPS coordinates have to be added to the header of the file. For geotagging I would prefer a faster chip such as the Sift Star 3.

Thanks to the geotagging application compatibility you don't have to upload it to a image host to pinpoint the capture location, it will be associated with Nokia Maps.

Now that I'm talking about Maps, I presume that Nokia Maps 2.0 with RTTI, which is a feed from traffic servers, and hybrid views will be included.

We have seen also that the new devices will have microUSB instead of miniUSB, but I'm not sure that charging will work through the microUSB port, I will hae to see in the pictures if there is a port or not.

Any other questions please let me know and I will try to figure them out.
