Is your phone lying in the drawer?

Written by Meraj Chhaya on July 10, 2008 – 3:22 pm

nokia-sustainable-products-graph-300x230 Is your phone lying in the drawer? If it is, you would be part of the 97% of the people who don't recycle their phones. I have nine phones in my drawer at the moment. Four of them I use for my reviews, two are broken, and the other three are my old phones. I should recycle five of the phones. What's your high score?

Nokia interviewed 6500 people in 13 countries, including Finland, Germany, Italy, Russia, Sweden, UK, United Arab Emirates, USA, Nigeria, India, China, Indonesia and Brazil, and got to the following statistics: 3% of the people interviewed recycled their phones, 4% sent them to landfills (thrown into the garbage), and finally, 44% of the people are like you and me: they keep the phones in the drawer, awaiting for them to decay or for someone to buy them.

My advice is always to resell your phone, sell it for parts, or really to recycle. How and when to recycle? Go to the nearest Nokia care centre, or visit this page. Nokia has sent me a list of the available recycle points in South Africa, in case you live in this country and want to take advantage of this new campaign.

Full press release after the break.
