Linux spreading to phones like a virus

Written by Meraj Chhaya on April 24, 2008 – 10:42 pm

Dual-boot phones and devices are something quite exciting, as users have more choice. Unfortunately manufacturers don't enable this, and to figure out how to do it you will have to know some advanced programming.

Gladly, there are people who do it for us, but it doesn't mean it becomes a piece of cake. An example of this is the recent porting of Google Android to the Nokia N810.

Who won FCC 700MHz spectrum bid?

Written by Meraj Chhaya on March 21, 2008 – 7:23 pm

The clear winner out of this monster auction was obviously FCC itself, scoring more than $19.8 Billion from frequency-hungry-bidders.

The bid that everyone was waiting Google to win was actually won by Verizon Wireless, who bid $4,74 Billion, against Google's $4,71 Billion. The reason everyone was making a fuss is Google's uprising in the mobile phone industry with the launch of Google Android, the possession of the 700MHz spectrum could enable Google to create their own network which would give more possibilities to their upcoming Operating System.

More than 1000 licences were auctioned, including regional ones from $17 000 to a billion dollars.

The 700MHz was previously used for analog television broadcasting, but as digital television is taking over, this spectrum is no longer needed.

The other major winner was AT&T, gaining access to 227 regional licences. We can expect many more products and services from the winners, and some of the newbies as well. Improvements on internet and other data usage is a must, and cheaper voice calls might also be in the basket.

Android on existing phones

Written by Meraj Chhaya on January 14, 2008 – 5:56 pm

Being Open Source you can expect a lot of "hacking", but this is a good thing because the user can always edit how his phone works, of course if he has programming skills.

In November 22, there were news of a hack on the Armadillo 500 from Atmark-Techno, which is a cellular applications processor. Not many details were released on this, so the first official hack was by Bennon Leslie, on the Neo1973, of course this shouldn't be too difficult because the Neo1973 is designed to run OpenMoko, which is based on the Linux 2.6 Kernel.

Scientists from Hungary have that Android should be able to run in any device powered by ARMv5TE processor. These scientists who are part of Eu.Edge showed Android on Sharp SL-C760.

Next we saw a Japanese hacker, Android Zaurus hacking another Sharp, C300M and he even played Lunar Lander on it.

In New Year's even, the hacker Cortez explained how to port Google's Android in more Zaurus, which led everyone to actually do it.

Even being a strong supporter of the Symbian OS, I'm still amazed by the possibilities that Open Source might bring to the mobile phone world. This is surely not the first Linux powered phone, but it is the one with more publicity than any before.
