N82 with another face: Nokia 6220 Classic

Nokia decided that the N82 could have some software tweaks, so they released it in a non-Nseries form, which we know as Nokia 6220 Classic.

The 6220 has pretty much the same hardware, the 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, the Xenon flash, QVGA resolution, although a smaller display. The N82 features a 2.4" screen while the 6220 Classic only has a 2.2".

In terms of performance, the 6220 Classic has a Single ARM 11 CPU running at 369MHz while the N82 features a Dual ARM11 CPU running at 332MHz, and it has a 3D Hardware accelerator which is missing from the 6220.

In terms of RAM, both have 128MB, although the N82 has 90MB of executable RAM, 10MB more than it's counterpart.

I was never good with cameras, but I can tell you that the 6220 Classic has a focal length of 4.6 mm while the N82 has a focal length of 5.6mm.
Both devices have video recording at 640x480 at 30fps but I believe we might get better video from the N82 as it has a 3D hardware accelerator.

The 6220 is ready to work in most parts of the world as it features Dual band HSDPA and Quad Band EDGE, against the N82 which is only Tri Band.

In terms of software the 6220 Classic is a clear winner, armed with the latest Symbian OS9.3 on a S60 UI 3rd edition with Feature Pack 2, which is dedicated to email goodies.

The pone seems to be focused on image sharing. "The Nokia 6220 classic will help web 2.0 novices and experienced bloggers snap, save and share pictures and videos easily. Saving, tagging and uploading pictures can now be done on the phone, seconds after the picture has been taken," says John Barry, Director, Connect devices, Nokia. "The Nokia 6220 classic, with its 5 megapixel camera, auto focus and xenon flash is a credible and reasonably priced alternative to single-purpose digital cameras and has the added benefit of A-GPS for location tagging, Nokia Maps and possibility to upgrade to full navigation."

03_n82_lowres N82 with another face: Nokia 6220 Classic

The N82 will last longer in terms of battery power as it's equipped with a BP-6MT 3.7V 1050 mAh which outlines the 6220's BP-5M 3.7V 900 mAh.

Both phones have A-GPS and TV-out, although 6220 Classic lacks WiFi, which is a crucial detail as we can find quite a lot of hotspots worldwide at this stage.

I'm leaving all the links from Forum Nokia intact in case the readers need them.

N82 Black official…big deal

Written by Meraj Chhaya on February 6, 2008 – 2:36 pm

The N82 Black Edition is here, but I'm rather sad not to see a big hard drive or any changes to the actual phone configuration, be them hardware or even software.
I was quite sure of a black release for a long time, but I was keen to see a Music Edition, unfortunately, it's just a colour change, atleast that is what we know.

5 Megapixel cameraphone comparison

Written by Meraj Chhaya on January 23, 2008 – 2:48 pm

I couldn't help but post the great comparison that the guys from phonearena.com did from 6 different 5 megapixel camera phones.

They tried every single situation and mode possible to reach the final results.

They involved the Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia N82, Sony Ericsson K850i, LG Viewty, Samsung G800 and Samsung G600.

 5 Megapixel cameraphone comparison

I will only post the final results below, the full review you can find it here.

In each of the categories we gave all six phones a different rating. The first place brings 6 points, 5 points for the second place, 4 points for third etc.

1. N82: With very good performance during the day, the best in night scenes, and excellent flash performance, the N82 is the winner in our competition for 5-megapixel cameraphones. Additionally it also has a very good macro mode!

2. G600: Although it has smaller model number than the G800, the G600 is the best phone for shooting during the day and has a good overall image quality.

3. K850: While we are not really fans of the Sony Ericsson phone, its overall quality is good, compared to the competition.

4. N95 8GB: The N95 is good during the day, but it’s ridiculous that it turns the focus off in night mode, and the LED flash performs poorly.

5. G800: The G800 is very good during the day as well, also with optical zoom, but its overall performance doesn’t place it in the winners’ circle.

6. Viewty: Although the LG Viewty has lots of options and features, its camera quality is mediocre next to the competition.

Miscellaneous:

Although it does not influence the quality of the pictures directly, the operational time of the camera is rather important for its use.

Nokia N82 Software Update - 11.0.117

Written by Meraj Chhaya on January 23, 2008 – 2:33 pm

What you see down there is more than 90MB of RAM! Yes I am jealous.

Thanks to Symbian V3 we also managed to find out that there are Youtube problems in this update. If you look at the change log you will see that it is quite skinny and it was quite fast. Nokia usually takes their time with updates.

N82 Music Edition on its way

Written by Meraj Chhaya on January 9, 2008 – 2:27 pm

This should stop being a news to S60 phones.
First a model is released, after two months, another model is released with 8GB memory, less flaws, and better specs, atleast that's what happen with N95 8GB and probably will happen with N82 8GB if it does get released.

This is a clear sign to us, wait! But if you're a mobile lover like, you won't really be able to do that.

To the patient ones, this is good news, to the rest of us, we'll just sit and watch.

According to our source, it is expected to make a debut at 3GSM in Barcelona.
