n82-camera1 N82 vs N95 vs N81 8GB camera shotsCoincidence or not, I had both the N81 8GB and N82 for trial on my holidays, at the same time. I also own a Nokia N95, so the best thing I could do is take a comparison on their image captures. I tested only few and likely scenarios.

N96 and N78 hands-on overview

Written by Meraj Chhaya on May 11, 2008 – 5:11 pm

07052008370-800x600 N96 and N78 hands-on overview

I finally managed to get my hands-on these fabulous devices and ask few questions on this and that. I’ve compared the N96, N78, N82 black, N95 8GB, and the N81 8GB. It took some effort to present the differences, and I managed to get everyone staring at me like I was a maniac. In any case, please do present your comments, and predictions on what you think these devices will turn out to be, and of course, if you will buy one!

How did the N95 affect Nokia’s strategy?

Written by Meraj Chhaya on April 25, 2008 – 10:18 pm

Among us mobile bloggers, we have been discussing how the N95 affected Nokia, the good and bad ways. Of course this is the fruit from a conversation started by one of the respected Symbian-Guru members, Rita El Khoury, better known as Dotsisx.

The whole debate started in Jaiku as an inspiration for one of Dotsisx’s posts, and it developed since by including posts from people from all around the blogosphere, including me. The discussion had gone so big that Dotsisx decided to divide her post in two, so for now we only have the expected Part 1 of “Did the N95 kill Nokia or Revive it?”. I most definitely can’t wait for Part 2, so go over to Symbian-Guru and post your thoughts or elaborate your thinking in the Jaiku itself, and let us know what’s your mind as well. Here’s the link for Dotsisx’s post, our Jaiku, Nokia Conversations’s post, and I leave you with the input I had given:

FM transmitters are here to stay

Written by Meraj Chhaya on March 17, 2008 – 4:40 pm

When the Nokia N78 was released, many were confused, and some still are confused on the purpose of a FM transmitter.

Broadcasting audio output over FM radio can be useful, especially in a car, and it can be a replacement of the Bluetooth headset or car kit.

Let’s try with a Nokia N95, which doesn’t have a FM transmitter built-in, but you can get one from any shop, at a cheap price.

You are going to hate me for that horrible flash that ruins the pictures, but I only get time at night to do write these articles, and at night….well there’s no sunshine.

Brought to you by:

The FM Transmitter plugs in to the N95 through the 3.5mm jack (God bless Nokia for the 3.5mm jack), but it needs power, that will be 12V DC through a tiny port at the side of the device. The Transmitter looks like an MP3 player, and it has a small display with a low lasting blue backlight. A car cigarette lighter cable is provided to plug in the power port.

Now we take it all to the car and plug it in. We set the frequency on the FM Transmitter to a empty channel to make sure it doesn’t interfere with any radio station. I selected 107.8MHz on mine.

The phone will recognise it as a pair of earphones, so we select that option. To test it, go to the Music application, and play any music that you like.

For this connection to work, you have to set the car radio at the same frequency, mine is 107.8MHz, but you can set it at any frequency you wish as long as there is nothing else on that channel.

The beauty of this device is that you can use it for anything your earphones work for, calls, VoIP, music, games, etc. So this means bye-bye to your Bluetooth headset….there it goes in the garbage bin:

These FM Transmitters are relatively cheap, you can get them at 10 US$, and at the end of the day you can just put it in your pocket. You music and phone calls will be outputted from your car speakers, so you can get rid of your Bluetooth car kits and headsets.

N95 expresses the beauty within

Written by Meraj Chhaya on March 9, 2008 – 7:23 pm

The camera of the N95 is far from dead. This is shown every few months on James Burland’s website, Nokia Creative, but let me share some of my little captures that the magnificent 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens equipped N95 let me take.

You will see pictures in the night, with extreme light, during dawn or sunrise, during daylight, in different angles, with water, in sunset, and big landscapes. Obviously I’m not a big photographer, but you can get a perspective of what wonders an average Joe can achieve with a camera always in his pocket. I resized all pictures so that they fit to my bandwidth limit, but you can clearly see how powerful the Nokia N95 is. The only thing missing here for me is the capture timing, I can’t ever capture still waves, and I hope this feature is added in next phones.

Nokia’s upcoming flagship phone, the Nokia N96 won’t have as many picture features as it will be focused on video recording, but when the time is right, don’t forget to share your views on it at Nokia N96 Blog and especially at the forum. For this picture, the right thread to kindly post your views, is this one.

First three pictures are captured in a club, where there is a swimming pool, a lot of lights, and reflex, you can also see the contrast of people, and how the lights affect the camera:

If you are wondering, these pictures were taken at H20 in Johannesburg, South Africa, where Paul van Dyk played his best tunes for 3 hours.

And now a simple picture that I took while the sun was rising and the clouds were expressing their colours:

The colours could have been brighter on the some clouds on the right of the image, but it seems that the main area is the center. The resolution of the camera gave the image possibility to mix diverse colours so that the clouds could have a strong texture.

Two different pictures that show you the focus on grass, sand, and even texture of the water, in the same scenario with a Jeep, which is the main object in the picture:

This is a good example of how a better lens could have given more detail to the picture, or perhaps more megapixels could have solved the problem. This is a huge steep mountain, quite a dangerous place, and the picture simply cannot tell the extent of the place, atleast that’s what I think, but you can always drop your views.

The next set describes calmness, and the image detail that I like to look at is the sand and water:

2293327843_2ccb7284f4 N95 expresses the beauty within

Quite a strange situation, where for me, the camera ignored everything and simply focused on the sun, it looks awesome, but again, I remember that in reality wasn’t like that. The N95 truly knows how to enhance pictures, which is great!

The last set. I don’t know if it needs more resolution or just a better lens, but here I think the N95 missed out the sense of texture and size:

Last but not least, please drop your views on each and every photograph you seen in this post, in this thread.
