From Vodacom HSDPA to Neotel CDMA2000 EVDO

Written by Meraj Chhaya on August 1, 2008 – 1:03 am

neotel-neoconnect-lite-phone From Vodacom HSDPA to Neotel CDMA2000 EVDOI’m going through an important phase in my life, and no, nothing to do with changes in my body. I’m changing my Internet Service Provider. Why am I telling you that? It has all got to do with wireless, and ultimately, phones.

If you’re not aware of my current internet status, I got a 2 year contract with Vodacom for their HDSPA modem. The speed is 1.8mbps but I can ask them to increase it to 3.6mbps, all for the cost of R50 per month. Useless. My cap is 2GB per month, and I’m paying R449 for it. I can lower it to t the minimum of 500MB at R249 or increase it to 10GB, and I’m not interested in the price.

Neotel extends coverage to Cape Town

neotel_logo Neotel extends coverage to Cape TownFor those that do not know, Neotel is the second national operator of South Africa, it has just began offering services to the retail market few months ago after a long delay, which was not only their fault, but also the national regulator ICASA’s fault. They have extended today their coverage to Cape Town.

I am planning to get it for myself, I live in Johannesburg, but only the Lite package is available, and there were some kinks on the upgrade procedure from Lite to Prime (when it is available).  Thankfully Neotel has one of the best call centres and representatives I have ever spoken to, in terms of respect and help. They are currently assisting me to meet my needs. I will report on my experience on getting Neotel internet as soon as I sign that contract.

The press release, as well as fact sheet and data sheet are available after the jump, so that you can inform yourself about the differences between the Lite and Prime packages. The Lite package doesn’t seem to be available in Cape Town though.
