Panasonic wins Japan with 100m phones

Written by Meraj Chhaya on April 11, 2008 – 9:15 pm

Panasonic statistics

Unlike other manufacturers, Panasonic opted to focus on Japan, and did quite a successful job. They shipped their 1 000 000th device, and the company to buy it was NTT DoCoMo.

NTT DoCoMo has received 30 million Symbian OS devices until November 2007, far behind Panasonic’s mark. However, smartphones will eventually overtake Panasonic and every other non-smartphone for that matter, a study while ago stated that this will happen around 2012. NTT DoCoMo had selected Symbian OS as one of its primary smartphone development platforms, according to Symbian.

Panasonic contributed to the development of mobile phone industry by delivering its first mobile phone “TZ-802B” in 1987, the world’s smallest and lightest “mova P” in 1991, and the digital mobile phone “mova P201 HYPER” in 1996. Weighing less than 100 g, the mova “P201 HYPER” became a big hit because of its compact, lightweight body and its user-friendly features.

Panasonic to add plasma displays to mobile phones

From LCD to OLED, now it’s plasma’s turn. Panasonic surely makes the best plasma TVs in the world, even I own one. To see a display with great contrast and resolution on a mobile phone is something we certainly need nowadays, and it would be a great addition to the upcoming touchscreen-enable cellphones, that of course, if it is possible to enable touchscreen-plasma displays.

I believe that the evolution to plasma displays on mobile phones should be quite far, we don’t even see laptops with them, and another concern is the energy required to power them.

"For nearly a decade, Panasonic’s engineers have been secretly working on a thin, lightweight low-voltage compact plasma display. [...] We will be able to incorporate miniature plasma displays into both consumer and business telephone products starting this fall. They will rival OLED displays for brightness, contrast and thinness, and can be manufactured for much less money," stated Mark Balsama in a press conference.

Balsama continued, "Many of our new phones will have vibrant color plasma screens that can run on just 1.5 volts and won’t require any additional wiring or special power supplies. We’ll be able to put plasma in cell phones, business phones, consumer phones, corded phones, cordless phones, and even door intercom monitors and fax machines. We will revolutionize the consumer electronics business, as Panasonic has done many times before."

After Bravia TV, there is Viera TV

Panasonic showed-off their amazing new display, this time on a mobile phone. Boasting the LCD Artificial Intelligence technology, the display has 252k colours and 854 x 480-pixel resolution portrayed in 3.5 inches.

If that wasn’t enough, there is 4000:1 contrast, I really don’t know how they managed to do that, but it will be useful to enjoy the 30fps video playback it supports. Mobile TV streaming is available, which should be with DVB-h, unless Panasonic believes that Japan has a better technology than the one approved by the European Union. Yes, you heard me right: Japan. They are the only ones who will receive this technological feat. Lately all hardcore phones are only sent there, if you remember a Sony Ericsson that I posted about some time ago.

The phone is highly competitive on the other features, supporting HSDPA, an SDHC port, and a gigantic revolving swivel, but only a 2 megapixel camera, which should of high quality: it has autofocus and image stabiliser.

Once upon a time, there was a 32GB SDHC

Written by Meraj Chhaya on January 9, 2008 – 1:00 pm

Panasonic has done it.

After the announcement from Sandisk about the 12GB microSD, here comes Panasonic showing off their 32GB SDHC on the CES in Las Vegas.

This is great news for digital camcorders and even cameras or people who use memory cards as mass storage devices.

This will lower the prices for lower spec memory cards and delight HD video enthusiasts.

Panasonic added a simple labeling feature on the front and back of the card.

32GB means 5 hours and 20 minutes of full HD recording taking flash memory to another level. I hope flash memory beats optical storage as the next storage medium, and this is a great step to it.
