SE Walkman Alicia high-end phone for Sept. 08

Written by Meraj Chhaya on June 13, 2008 – 11:13 pm

sony-ericsson-walkman-codename-alicia-98x300 SE Walkman Alicia high-end phone for Sept. 08 A new Sony Ericsson Walkman has surfaced. There is no information on any of the specifications or even the name itself. What we do know is the codename, which is Alicia.

What I can sort of confirm is that it will be a high-end device, and it should release on September this year, and this is according to our Sony Ericsson roadmap for release dates.

As you can see, Alicia is a clamshell Walkman that looks like the the Sony Ericsson W980 on the numeric keypad part.

There is a hidden external display and what seems to be a navi-wheel, and according to a poster at esato forums, it will display the weather or animations. The phone will also change themes according to the time of the day.

We can’t notice any high specification camera on the phone from the leaked pictures, but by being a high-end device we expect it to have HSDPA, Bluetooth, GPS, and perhaps WLAN. We might be wrong, but what would you expect from such a classification, and at this stage in time?

More pictures and the video after the jump.

W980…and no, it’s not a Photoshop!

Written by Meraj Chhaya on February 13, 2008 – 3:07 pm

Everytime I saw this phone it looked like a fake, I don’t know if you also think so, but to me the picture looks drawn on a computer:

Well we do know that is real, so let’s hit the specs.

A great advantage on the music side is the interal FM antenna, no more need to plug headsets just to get hold of radio.

The internal display is still the same old QVGA, we haven’t seen many improvements on resolutions, apart on less famous phone, but after all it’s only 2.2".

The secondary display, the external one, has an acceptable 176×176 resolution, although I’m not aware of the size of it.

8GB of internal memory is the standard now for any good music phone, and Sony Ericsson didn’t forget that, even being a slim fashionable phone, the W980 has the heartbeat of a great phone.

Obviously we can’t ask for perfection, so a 3.2 megapixel camera is a decent addition to the package. As usual on Walkman series, TrackID is a must, and on this phone an accelerometer was included making it possible to use the Shake Control.

To finish in style, there is HSDPA at 3.6mbps, but unfortunately no WiFi.

Unfortunately, just like any glossy device, the Sony Ericsson is a fingerprint magnet.

w900_1 Sony Ericsson leads in the Music Industry

With over 145 million Walkman Series phones sold, Sony Ericsson affirmed it maintained leadership in the music phones’ industry.

Nokia has their own music series, XpressMusic and Music Edition N-Series but according to Sony Ericsson, they were left behind.

In total, Sony Ericsson sold over 100 million handsets in 2007.

“Sony Ericsson finished a very good year, which highlighted how the company has strategically positioned itself to capture market share with an expanded product portfolio. Investments are being made in both R&D and brand building, to deepen the portfolio and strengthen Sony Ericsson’s presence in new and developing markets around the world. Our target remains to become one of the top three players in the industry, and the momentum we established in 2006 and 2007 makes this a realistic and achievable ambition,” said Dick Komiyama, President of Sony Ericsson.

Here is the official data from the financial achievements of Sony Ericsson:

16 January 2008 Q4 Highlights:

  • 18% increase in volume year-on-year
  • Continued market share gains and profitable growth
  • Continued investment for the future

2007 Highlights:

  • Over 100 million units sold – more than double global market growth rate
  • Margins remain strong as company shifts to broader portfolio
  • Unit growth underpinned by increased sales of lower priced phones
  • 145 million music enabled phones sold to date, of which 57 million were Walkman® phones – maintaining leadership in music
