N810 with WiMax finally announced

Written by Meraj Chhaya on April 1, 2008 – 9:57 pm

2b3f8189366a468eb6601f2da6affe53 N810 with WiMax finally announced

The ultimate move in WiMax would be big corporates making their products public. This is the case with Nokia, I have seen little publicity from networks about the new wireless technology, but once Nokia pushes them, we will see some useful growth in them. The Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition is expected to be available in the United States during the summer of 2008, and had been leaked long time ago as Nokia N830.

"By delivering the kind of open Internet experience that consumers previously only expected on a desktop PC, the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition is a compelling example of how next generation broadband wireless technology will not only change the way people think about the Internet, it will change the very nature of the Internet itself," said Ari Virtanen, Vice President of Convergence Products for Nokia. "Much in the way that the evolution of the fixed Internet from dial-up to broadband enabled a host of new Internet services and changed people’s expectations of what an Internet experience should be, the transition to a broadband Internet experience set free from the constraints of a fixed network will spark the next wave of new mobile Internet services, and will forever change the perception of what the Internet can be."

Along with a full featured web browser, powered by Mozilla, that takes full advantage of the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition’s large 4.13 inch touch screen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a variety of popular web-based services are also supported. Many of these applications can be found on Nokia’s dedicated OS 2008 User Site. To keep connected while on-the-go, a number of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Instant Messaging (IM) clients are available, including Skype(TM), Google Talk(TM), and Gizmo5, which can also take advantage of the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition’s built-in web cam for video calls. A client for the popular Rhapsody online music service is also available, transforming the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition into a portable jukebox with millions of songs available to enjoy at a few taps of the screen. Beyond these well-known services, an active developer community has also emerged around the Linux-based Internet Tablet platform, creating additional applications - from games to productivity tools.

A number of additional features further enhance the utility of the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition. With built-in GPS, the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition can easily transform itself into a fully featured personal navigation device, complete with real-time on-screen maps. An integrated media player and 2 GB of internal memory, expandable to a full 10 GB of memory with the addition of an optional microSD memory card, allows the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition to store and play back a large library of music and video content. When not in range of a WiMAX network, the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition can also access the Internet over Wi-Fi or via conventional cellular data networks by pairing to a compatible mobile phone via Bluetooth technology.

Motorola and the WiMax Second generation cards

Motorola today unveiled two new 802.16e Wave 2-ready WiMAX devices. The desktop CPEi 750 and PCCw 200 PC card are part of a new generation of WiMAX devices designed to bring end-users higher data rates at a lower cost. These and other WiMAX customer premises equipment (CPE) and devices, along with Motorola’s WiMAX infrastructure solutions, will be on display enabling personal media experiences in Motorola’s booth (#8A159) at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Feb. 11-14, 2008.

I believe that not much is being seen in WiMax networks, in terms of mobile phones or even laptop built-in modules, and especially little advertisement is being shown, atleast on most countries. By 2009, WiMax should be replacing technologies like iBurst and GPRS/EDGE networks, and someday even HSDPA and HSUPA.

“Motorola offers a tiered portfolio of fixed and nomadic devices that meet a variety of feature and functionality requirements demanded by consumers,” said Fred Wright, senior vice president, Cellular Networks and WiMAX, Motorola. “From simple data-only devices to robust units that combine data, Voice over IP, and WiFi, our portfolio of market-tested, PC cards and award-winning design CPEs are helping to accelerate broadband growth for both fixed and mobile operators’ WiMAX deployments. With these devices, they can offer new services today to many types of customers.”

With the addition of the CPEi 750 and PCCw 200 PC card, Motorola continues to expand its portfolio of distinct and stylish Wave 2-ready WiMAX devices which includes the CPEi 850 - honored with the Industry Choice Award at WiMAX World USA 2007 in Chicago. These new Wave 2-ready devices are successors to Motorola’s currently available portfolio that includes the data-only CPEi 100 launched at CES 2008, the outdoor CPEo 400, and the PCCw 100 PC card. The portfolio also includes a data and VoIP product - the CPEi 300 - which was named Best of WiMAX World Europe 2007 in the devices category.

Motorola’s new PCCw 200 PC card can support both 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz on one card, giving users access to nomadic and mobile connectivity with global roaming capabilities. The PCCw 200 is expected to be available for commercial deployment in the second quarter of this year.

With true “plug-and-play” capability, operators are able to speed time to service and reduce operating costs associated with service turn-up. Users can be online in just a few minutes from the time they’ve unpacked the CPE from the box. The WiMAX network automatically detects the Motorola subscriber device upon power up and performs the necessary authentication processes. An elegant and user-friendly graphical interface allows end-users to self-diagnose their connections and personalize their service.

Online gaming, Opera web browsing possible thanks to WiMax device

Written by Meraj Chhaya on January 28, 2008 – 1:29 pm

POSBRO and Opera have joined forced to create the first online-gaming-through-WiMax device.

Opera 9 will be the web browser used, and since WiMax can hit speeds over 70mbps depending on network speeds, browsing will be lightning fast.

The device will feature a 4 inch touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth, and you can use it as a WiMax modem on a PC.

The G100 has a slide form, when pushing the slide down, it reveals PlayStation type gaming keys.

The device will be available in Korea, as the manufacturer has struck a deal with the network. As WiMax networks evolve, we will probably see more devices alike.
